In the letter, Greene laid out a detailed case against the speaker, accusing Johnson of failing to deliver on promises he ran on and breaking legislative procedural rules. She even blamed him for jeopardizing the House Republican majority by not doing more to prevent some retiring GOP members from leaving Congress early. Part of the argument to try and dissuade Greene from moving forward with the process, according to sources, is that ousting Johnson would only deliver Democrats the House majority. “And no, electing a new Republican Speaker will not give the majority to the Democrats. That only happens if more Republicans retire early, or Republicans actually vote for Hakeem Jeffries.

In 2017, Louisiana overhauled its criminal justice system with broad bipartisan support, all in an effort to lose the distinction of having the nation’s highest incarceration rate. Lawmakers, urged on by a new Republican governor, rushed through a special session last month to roll back the 2017 changes. The latter change is meant to allow the state to bring back capital punishment after more than a decade. “I promised the people of this state, if elected governor, I would do everything within my power to improve the safety of our communities,” Gov. Jeff Landry said as he declared victory when the session concluded last week.

CNN —Mitch McConnell has bowed to political reality and announced that he is relinquishing his role as leader of Senate Republicans. (Chao served as transportation secretary under former President Donald Trump, before quitting the post following the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol.) The anti-Trump coalition within the Republican Party is small and hanging on by a thread, and there is little chance of that changing in the short term. Now, one of Haley’s most generous benefactors, the conservative political action committee Americans for Prosperity, funded by the Koch network, has withdrawn its funds. And now, like other Trump opponents, Romney finds himself heading for the exit at the end of his current term.

Either way, Washington paid little attention to his birthday according to Mountvernon.org, the website of the organization that manages his estate. The official designation is as Washington’s Birthday, although it has come to be known informally as Presidents Day. A small number of states, including Illinois, observe Lincoln’s birthday as a public holiday, according to the Library of Congress. And some commemorate both Lincoln and Washington on Presidents Day. In 2022, the Utah legislature banned transgender girls from high school girls’ sports. In August 2022, a Utah judge granted a preliminary injunction allowing trans girls to compete on girls’ teams after the parents of two trans girls filed a lawsuit. But as long as transgender girls’ gender identities are policed, cisgender girls will continue to have theirs policed as well. “I avoided athletic activities out of terror, not disinterest,” one participant said (a new study published last month also found that trans girls are primarily avoiding sports out of fear of harassment). If cisgender girls avoid sports out of these fears as well, they stand to be similarly negatively impacted.

Since most Americans last voted for Congress, thousands of people have been added to certain voting districts — and subtracted from others — under new political maps enacted following court rulings. Here's a look at how voting districts have changed — or could change — before the November elections and what affect that could have on the battle for control of Congress. Perhaps the most notable is Florida, where a trial judge in September ruled that U.S. House districts pushed by Republican Gov. Litigation over congressional districts also is lingering in Arkansas, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and Wisconsin. The reshaping of voting districts matters, but doesn't necessarily pre-determine the outcome of elections.

As Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz continues to circulate a drafted resolution saying former President Donald Trump didn't "engage in insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or give aid or comfort to the enemies thereof," retired DC Metropolitan Police Officer Michael Fanone isn't surprised. "It's another example of Matt Gaetz's endless ass-kissing campaign to ingratiate himself with Donald Trump," he told Business Insider Friday morning. In late January, the Daily Mail reported Gaetz's office had begun sending emails of the resolution to members of the House who've endorsed Trump's reelection campaign. Gaetz has yet to file the resolution, but Politico reported that same day it would likely be coming soon. Ultimately, he said, "I feel betrayed" by Trump supporters and legislators he said are operating out of their self-interests.

The legislation was among new Republican-backed restrictions across the country following the 2020 presidential election, when then-President Donald Trump falsely attributed his loss to fraud. North Carolina is expected to be a closely contested state in this year's presidential contest. Under the new law, a voter who uses same-day registration is sent a postcard to confirm their address. Young voters and minority voters, both groups that tend to vote Democratic, take advantage of same-day registration more frequently. Between 100,000 and 120,000 residents use same-day registration in presidential years, according to the state elections board.

How This Climate Activist Justifies Political Violence

Photo illustration by Bráulio Amado Talk How This Climate Activist Justifies Political ViolenceWith the 2021 publication of his unsettling book, “How to Blow Up a Pipeline,” Andreas Malm established himself as a leading thinker of climate radicalism. I have engaged in as much militant climate activism as I have had access to in my activist communities and contexts. Like I said, I’ve participated in things that I can’t tell you about because they’ve been illegal and they’ve been militant. I can’t tell you what things I have done, but the things that I do and that any other climate activist should be doing cannot be an individual project. This goes for political violence too, unless you’re a pacifist and you reject every form of political violence — that’s a reasonably coherent philosophical position.

CNN —Donald Trump is underscoring the profound choice that voters could face next year with expansive claims of unchecked presidential power alongside increasingly unapologetic anti-democratic rhetoric. This has huge consequences not simply for the courtroom accounting that is yet to take place over his first turbulent term. If the twice-impeached former president wins the Republican nomination and the presidency, it is already clear that a second term would risk destroying the principle that presidents do not hold monarchial power. “Joe Biden is not the defender of American democracy,” Trump said during a campaign stop in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Saturday. And if he succeeds in 2024, his legal arguments will have been a warning of a second term that he envisions with almost no guardrails.

REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Nov 29 (Reuters) - U.S. budget wrangling could further delay funding approval for new agreements with Pacific island nations meant to counter Chinese influence, creating an opportunity for Beijing in the strategically vital region, congressional and other sources say. But congressional sources say this looks impossible as lawmakers argue over spending priorities, raising concerns that a further delay could create an opening for China, which has been wooing financially strapped Pacific economies. "It's feeling pretty dead in the NDAA context," the source said, adding that focus had turned to finding other legislation to secure the COFA funding. "It is really incomprehensible given the amount we're talking about ... why Congress cannot get its act together," Yun said. "What we risk is China getting in where we really don't want them – in places like Palau, RMI, FSM.

The difference between libertarianism and libertinism can be summed up as the difference between rights and desires. A libertarian is concerned with her own liberty but also knows that this liberty ends where yours begins. A healthy libertarianism can still be individualistic, but it’s also deeply concerned with both personal virtue and the rights of others. Not all libertarians are pro-life, but a pro-life libertarian will recognize the humanity and dignity of both mother and child. I don’t think the pro-life movement has fully reckoned with the political and cultural fallout from the libertine right-wing response to the Covid pandemic.

There is a story that professional ideamongers like to tell about political history that gives pride of place to their own work. It’s a story that usually begins with some small tribe of writers or intellectuals who come up with a set of theories that describe the world in a new way. This fall, I’ve been co-teaching a course at Yale University, the Crisis of Liberalism, which looks for the roots of today’s disturbances in long-running debates about the liberal order. And one of my thoughts is that both of them break, in different ways, with the familiar narrative about intellectuals and democracy I’ve just sketched. With wokeness, you have a movement in which the intelligentsia really matters but democratic politics much less so.

Tesla shares closed down about 5% on Thursday at $209.98 after HSBC Global initiated coverage with a "reduce" rating and a $146 price target. "Arguably the ideas need to become reality to support the current share price," the analysts said. On the more bullish side, HSBC analysts said Tesla's core automotive business "faces fewer challenges than the incumbents and as such, deserves a premium." Besides the "reduce" rating from HSBC, Tesla is also facing a widening strike in Sweden. The IF Metall trade union, which represents some Tesla service employees, began a strike action at 12 Tesla service centers on Oct. 27, The New York Times reported.

Twelve Democrats voted with 214 Republicans for the bill, and two Republicans joined 194 Democrats in objecting. Republicans have a 221-212 majority in the House, but Biden's fellow Democrats control the Senate 51-49. To become law, the bill would have to pass both the House and Senate and be signed by Biden. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office on Wednesday said the IRS cuts and Israel aid in the House bill would add nearly $30 billion to the U.S. budget deficit, currently estimated at $1.7 trillion. Robert Brustein, an erudite and contentious advocate for profit-indifferent theater, in the service of which he wore many hats — critic, teacher, producer, director, playwright and even actor — died on Sunday at his home in Cambridge, Mass. His death was confirmed by his wife, Doreen Beinart. Mr. Brustein was dean of the drama school at Yale and founded and ran the Yale Repertory Theater and the American Repertory Theater at Harvard, producing well over 100 plays and securing them in the regional theater firmament. A prolific writer with the zeal of an environmentalist and the moral certainty of a martyr, he reviewed stage productions for The New Republic for more than 50 years. In many books and in countless newspaper and magazine articles, he argued for brave theater, intellectual theater, nonpandering theater, and worried that the art form was being attenuated by the profit motive.

Known as a passionate and provocative theater advocate who pushed for boundary-breaking works and for classics to be adventurously modernized, Brustein founded both the Yale Repertory Theatre and the American Repertory Theatre at Harvard. He was dean of the Yale School of Drama from 1966-1979 and during that time founded the Yale Repertory Theatre. “They'll have an unresolved experience.”After a painful, highly publicized dismissal from Yale, Brustein in 1979 switched to Harvard, where he taught English and founded the American Repertory Theatre in 1980. At both Yale Rep and A.R.T., Brustein told The Boston Globe in 2012, he embraced popular theater with a nationalistic streak: “We were trying to liberate American theater from its British overseers. The light, absurd comedy, which gently mocks the lavishness of other musicals, premiered in 1994 at the American Repertory Theatre and was close to making it to Broadway.
